Composition and pharmacokinetics
The active ingredient of the ointment is hydrocortisone 17-butyrate, a polyethylene ointment base acts as an auxiliary substance. Hydrocortisone 17-butyrate is a hormone with a modified chemical structure of the molecule. This modification allowed several times to increase the effectiveness of the active substance compared to conventional hydrocortisone, which is synthesized in the human body.
Hydrocortisone 17-Butyrate has a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-edema and antipruritic action. Another useful property of a modified hormone is the absence of getting used to it. At observance of therapeutic doses and the recommended duration of treatment does not occur "cancellation effect".
After applying the ointment on the skin, the active substance accumulates in it, slightly absorbed into the blood. That part of unchanged hydrocortisone butyrate, which entered the bloodstream, is excreted through the kidneys and intestines. The main part of the active substance undergoes changes in the cells of the epidermis.
Locoid should not be applied to the area around the eyes, it can cause glaucoma. Eye contact may cause an increase in intraocular pressure. The ointment does not need to be applied to the scalp, face, genitals and skin folds. For the treatment of skin lesions located in these places, it is necessary to use other forms of the drug (cream or emulsion).
It is allowed to use ointment for the treatment of children from 6 months of age. In this case, the duration of the course of therapy is reduced and the minimum required amount of the drug is used to achieve a therapeutic effect. Ointment can be treated with no more than 20% of the total area of the body.
If after 2 weeks of treatment with Lokoid, there is no improvement, it is necessary to stop using the drug and consult a doctor for further examination and diagnosis. There are no data on the interaction of Lokid ointment with other drugs.
Lokoid is a soft, oily ointment of light gray or white color. The drug is available in aluminum tubes weighing 30 g. The ointment should be stored in a place inaccessible to children, at a temperature not higher than 25 ° C.
It is released without a prescription.
