Vulvovaginal candidiasis or otherwise genital candidiasis is a disease of the female genital tract that affects the mucous membranes of the vagina and vulva. The main cause of pathology is the accelerated growth of fungi of the genus Candida, which occurs under the influence of a variety of reasons.
Candida vulvovaginitis is diagnosed when signs of inflammation are seen on examination of the external genital organs and inside the vagina. This indicates a significant development of yeast-like fungi and requires the appointment of competent therapy. In case of inflammation, vulvar candida vulvitis covers only the external genital organs and most often external causes of this pathology, such as insufficient hygiene and mechanical damage.
If the inflammatory process is localized only on the mucous membrane of the vagina, then we are talking about vaginitis . Local and general causes are also provoking factors for candidal vaginitis , the most frequent of which include a decrease in the functioning of the immune system. In turn, the lack of protective forces can also be triggered by a large group of factors.
Candida vulvovaginitis is divided into several types. These include candidiasis, acute inflammation, and recurrent candidiasis. Symptoms of the disease depend on these forms of the disease.
This form of the disease is manifested by pronounced symptoms. Patients who apply to the gynecologist, mainly complain of a number of characteristic symptoms:
- On vaginal discharge, in their structure, they resemble a curd mass. The secreted secret is quite ample and this leads to irritation of the genital tract and external organs.
- The disease is accompanied by severe itching and burning. Irritation leads to scratching of the skin and mucous membranes.
- Because of the pronounced process of inflammation, sexual contact causes pain.
- Often recorded sourish smell.
When viewed on the mucous membranes and skin eruptions are detected, in form they are similar to small bubbles. Also revealed hyperemia and marked swelling of the vaginal walls, small and large labia. The duration of the acute phase of vulvovaginitis is estimated at two months. If during this time the disease is not cured, then it will become chronic.
Recurrent form of the disease is exposed if the disease lasts more than two months. Symptoms are expressed in small volume, and in most cases may be absent. Discharge whitish, less normal. One of the most persistent symptoms is itching, it can be both permanent and periodic. On examination, the gynecologist pays attention to the atrophy of vaginal tissues, that is, to their thinning. Infiltration and whitish discharge are also possible.
In this form, there are no subjective manifestations of the disease, when viewed from the vagina, its condition is within the normal range. But at the same time deviations in smear analyzes are detected. If the patient does not complain of frequent exacerbations of thrush, then usually the candida is not treated with medicines. Asymptomatic candidiasis is detected in almost 20% of women in reproductive age.
Candidate status is an indication of increased immunity and prophylactic treatment before conception planning. During pregnancy, the immune system decreases and girls are more likely to have thrush symptoms.
Candida vulvovaginitis is already diagnosed on the basis of an examination, and is confirmed after laboratory diagnosis of a smear. It is also necessary to pass tests for sexually transmitted diseases, as the thrush often proceeds in conjunction with other infections.
